A Cybernetic Approach to Management Tools for Distributed Projects

The assumption for this research is that there are managers and members in distributed projects that do not have the right support and help from Project Management Tools (PMT), which would be useful in their work. The purpose of this paper is to improve the conditions for management tools in distributed projects. To achieve the purpose, an idealized PMT is designed, based on managerial cybernetic theories. Important functionality presented in the idealized PMT are for example different access levels, evaluation methods, organizational memory (i.e. knowledge database) and critical alerts, but also activities in context. A comparison between four existing web-based PMTs and the idealized PMT is also made. This resulted in a gapanalysis that revealed that one of the existing PMTs seems to be significant in comparison to the others and is not too far away from the idealized PMT. General proposals for further development of web-based PMTs are finally accomplished.
